Atletico Madrid agrees £34.2m deal for Tottenham's Romero

Atletico Madrid is set to strengthen its defense by agreeing to a £34.2 million (40 million euros) transfer fee for Tottenham's Cristian Romero. The 28-year-old Argentine international is poised to become Atletico's fourth acquisition of the summer transfer window.

As part of the agreement, Tottenham will retain a 15% sell-on clause, potentially benefiting from any future transfer of Romero. The center-back departs Spurs after five seasons, during which he made 156 appearances and scored 13 goals. He was also a key figure in Argentina's World Cup campaign this summer, missing only one match.

Romero captained Tottenham last season, leading the team as they narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League. His permanent transfer from Atalanta in 2021 for £42.5 million saw him become a crucial component of their defense. The news comes as Tottenham is also reportedly in advanced talks to sell full-back Djed Spence to Inter Milan for £25.6 million.
