Attentive Beachgoers Have Aided Lifeguards During Busy Summer Season

Beachgoers in Denmark have shown remarkable attentiveness this summer, acting as crucial eyes and ears for lifeguards and potentially saving lives. TrygFonden's Coastal Lifesaving reports that the public's vigilance has been invaluable, particularly in spotting incidents occurring beyond the designated safe swimming zones.

Anders Hammer, head of training for TrygFonden's Coastal Lifesaving, praised the public's awareness. "Generally, people are quite good at keeping their eyes open when they are out on the beach," he said. "In the past week, we have experienced several instances where people have approached us to report incidents that happened further down the beach – that is, outside our swimming areas."

These situations often involve individuals drifting out to sea on inflatable toys or paddleboards, well beyond the areas marked by red-and-yellow flags that indicate lifeguard supervision. "The lifeguards cannot see the entire beach. They can primarily see within the swimming area. So, if you see something outside the swimming areas, just alert them," Hammer urged.

Lifeguards advise beachgoers to alert them rather than attempting a rescue themselves unless they are experienced rescuers, as intervening could worsen the situation. However, they can assist lifeguards in other ways, such as by alerting them to medical professionals like doctors or nurses who might be present. Hammer also noted that while the summer season has been good overall, two areas for improvement remain: keeping a close eye on children and being aware of wind, water, and weather conditions, particularly offshore winds.
