Audience Award: Armin Mueller-Stahl to Receive Golden Henne for Lifetime Achievement

At 95, Armin Mueller-Stahl is set to receive the Golden Henne for lifetime achievement in person at Friday’s gala in Leipzig.

The actor is among the few artists to have found success in both East Germany and West Germany before earning acclaim for films made in Hollywood. His international breakthrough came with “Music Box” in 1989, followed by work with directors including Barry Levinson, Jim Jarmusch, Steven Soderbergh and Volker Schlöndorff.

Mueller-Stahl received an Oscar nomination in 1997 for playing the father of Australian pianist David Helfgott in “Shine.” He also won a Grimme Award for his performance in “The Manns: A Novel of the Century,” released in 2001. Earlier in his career, he portrayed a concentration-camp prisoner in “Naked Among Wolves,” a 1963 film directed by Frank Beyer.

“I am now shortly before my 96th birthday, and my life’s work is shortly before its conclusion. That it is now being honored once again with this beautiful award means a great deal to me,” Mueller-Stahl said in a statement.

The media awards ceremony will take place at the Leipzig Trade Fair and will be broadcast live on Das Erste. Esther Sedlaczek and Florian Silbereisen will host. This year’s audience categories cover film and television, entertainment, music and sport. Winners receive a bird-shaped sculpture, and the award’s name honors the late East German entertainer Helga “Henne” Hahnemann.
