Augustine's new EP reflects a 'confused year'

Fredrik Gustafsson, performing as Augustine, seeks to capture a sense of disorientation and the search for purpose in his latest EP, "In the margins, in shades of pale blue." The artist describes the collection of songs as a "year-end statement" on a period of confusion.

"I want to see if anyone can relate to the feeling of not having a good handle on things," Gustafsson stated. He explained that while his previous album explored disco influences with co-writer Rassmus Björnson, this EP returns to the foundational sound that inspired their musical journey.

The song "Somewhere" features lyrics like "Borderline wasting our time/And now we're coming down," which Gustafsson interprets as a reflection of his own indecisiveness. He describes it as a fleeting song about wishing for someone to book tickets and choose a destination, highlighting a personal struggle with knowing where to "land." This EP, therefore, marks a personal milestone, partly as a conclusion to a confusing year and partly because he has recently turned thirty.

It is the feeling that I can never decide on anything, make a decision or think for myself.

Regarding the track "Ventura (Hang me out to dry)," Gustafsson touches on a persistent "blanket of anxiety" he wishes to shed. He clarifies that this doesn't necessarily mean he must change, but rather acknowledges impulsive desires like "I need to exercise more." He admits to a feeling of never being entirely satisfied, a sentiment he believes is common.

Then it is nice to get into a kind of infatuation. It is also a fleeting song about wishing someone would book tickets somewhere, and that they decide where.

Augustine's music has previously been noted for its dreamy pop sound and its ability to stay on the right side of retro influences. His debut was described as a love story, and he has been recognized for his potential to establish himself within the Swedish indie music scene.
