Australia beats Turkey 2-0 at World Cup; Irankunda cites motivation from being underestimated

Australia secured a 2-0 victory over Turkey in their World Cup Group D opener, fueled by a pre-match sense of being underestimated. Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring in the 27th minute, and Connor Metcalfe sealed the win in the 75th minute.

Irankunda, who also scored the opening goal, described the win as a "dream come true" and highlighted the team's hard work. He specifically mentioned Turkey's perceived underestimation as a source of motivation. "The Turks underestimated us before the match. It was extra motivation because we don't like it when people speak ill of us, because we are a great team," Irankunda stated. He acknowledged Turkey's greater possession but emphasized Australia's effectiveness in scoring and demonstrating their footballing ability.

Despite the loss, Turkish coach Vincenzo Montella remained optimistic. He noted that his team had more possession and created numerous chances but couldn't convert them. "That's football. They defended very well; it was difficult to get into their penalty area. They played brilliant counter-attacks – that is their greatest strength," Montella commented. He added that the result was disappointing but expressed confidence in the team's ability to move past it. In the other Group D match, the USA comfortably defeated Paraguay 4-1.
