Australia Extends Coach Tony Popovic's Contract Ahead of Türkiye Match

Tony Popovic, the head coach of the Australian national football team, has had his contract extended by the Football Australia until 2027. This decision comes ahead of Australia's first match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Türkiye.

Popovic's new contract ensures continuity for the Socceroos as they prepare for crucial upcoming fixtures. The 51-year-old coach is also on the cusp of making history. Having represented Australia as a player in the 2006 World Cup held in Germany, he is set to become the first Australian to participate in the tournament as both a player and a head coach.

Popovic took the helm of the Australian national team on September 23, 2024, and successfully guided the team to qualify for the World Cup, marking their return to the global stage after 2014. His coaching experience also includes a brief stint in Turkey, where he managed Karabükspor for 11 matches during the 2017-2018 season.
