Australia's Last Surviving Kokoda Veteran, Reginald Chard, Dies at 102

Reginald James Chard, the last surviving Australian veteran of the Kokoda campaign, has died at the age of 102. RSL Australia announced his death on Friday, expressing deep sorrow.

The organization described Chard as one of the nation's final connections to the soldiers who fought along the arduous Kokoda Track during World War II. They extended condolences to his family and friends, acknowledging the profound impact he had throughout his life.

Chard enlisted in the Australian Army at 18 and served in Papua New Guinea. His wartime experiences included marching through the New Guinea mountains, contracting malaria at Eora Creek, and enduring fierce combat at Sanananda.

After returning home, Chard built a life with his wife, Betty. In his later years, he became a dedicated advocate for preserving the memory of the Kokoda campaign, particularly through his involvement with the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway. RSL Australia noted his "irreplaceable" presence at the memorial, where he honored the sacrifices of his fellow soldiers.
