Australia's needle exchanges struggle with surge in peptide users

Needle exchange facilities across Australia are facing a critical shortage of safe injecting equipment due to a "marked increase" in peptide users, according to experts.

Geoff Davey, chief executive of the Queensland Injectors Health Network (QuIHN), noted a spike in usage starting last year, describing it as a national trend. He explained that people are using peptides for various reasons, including weight loss, image enhancement, and general well-being. However, this surge is also linked to severe health problems, with acute cases of liver toxicity presenting in emergency departments.

Mary Harrod, chief executive of New South Wales drug user organization Needle Users and AIDS Association (NUAA), expressed deep concern over the trend, calling it a "giant lab experiment" happening in real time without adequate response. NUAA is struggling to cope with the overwhelming demand for needles and syringes, with usage numbers skyrocketing from a contracted 500,000 units to two million. Harrod warned that the organization might have to lay off staff to manage the escalating costs and demand.
