Australia: Two airliners narrowly avoid collision

A serious incident at Sydney Airport saw two airliners narrowly avoid a collision on the tarmac, prompting an investigation by Australian transport safety authorities.

The near-miss occurred when a Jetstar A320, preparing for an domestic flight, had to brake suddenly. The reason for the abrupt stop was the proximity of a Qatar Airways Boeing 777, which was being towed at the time. Photos from the scene show the large Boeing appearing extremely close to the Airbus's right flank.

"Damage has been noted" between the Boeing's front landing gear and the tow vehicle following the emergency braking. Additionally, a Jetstar crew member, who was moving within the cabin at the time of the braking, sustained injuries and received medical attention. The airline stated their aircraft was following air traffic control instructions when the other plane appeared unexpectedly close.

Regulators are collecting data from both aircraft and air traffic control, and interviewing personnel involved. An anonymous official suggested the towing vehicle may not have followed air traffic control instructions. The incident caused delays at Australia's busiest airport. Qatar Airways has not yet commented on the event.
