Australia upsets Türkiye 2-0 in World Cup opener

Australia began their World Cup campaign with a surprise 2-0 victory over Türkiye in their Group D opener on Saturday. The Socceroos secured the win thanks to goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, coupled with a strong defensive performance.

Türkiye, making their first World Cup appearance in 24 years, relied on young playmaker Arda Guler to drive their attack. Guler had early chances, but Australia's defense, described as well-drilled, effectively contained him and repelled numerous Turkish advances.

Australia took the lead in the first half when Irankunda capitalized on a pass down the left channel, cut inside, and scored past Türkiye's goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir. Türkiye came close to equalizing when Abdulkerim Bardakci's powerful shot was tipped onto the post by Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach.

In the second half, Türkiye dominated possession, pushing for an equalizer. However, their efforts were ultimately thwarted. Australia sealed their unexpected victory in the 75th minute when Metcalfe scored from distance with a bouncing shot, catching Türkiye's defense off guard. This result places Australia second in Group D, behind co-hosts the United States.
