Australian Activist Detained on Gaza Flotilla Returns Home, Alleges Abuse

Gemma O'Toole, a 23-year-old Australian student, has returned to Melbourne after being detained by Israel while participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla. She was among 11 Australian activists and hundreds of international participants aboard the flotilla, which aimed to break Israel's naval blockade on Gaza and deliver aid. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intercepted the boats off the coast of Cyprus on May 18. Israel subsequently deported all foreign activists to Türkiye.

Upon her arrival, O'Toole expressed relief at being home but also deep sadness and trauma. "It is going to take me a while to come to terms with what's happened and everything I have seen," she told the ABC. O'Toole alleged that Israeli forces subjected the activists to physical and sexual abuse during their detention. Organizers of the flotilla have also made similar allegations, which Israel's prison service has denied. The IDF stated that their orders require "respectful and appropriate treatment" and that any concrete complaints would be thoroughly examined.

O'Toole stated that the attention on the activists' treatment should not distract from the ongoing suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. She referenced a video posted by Israel's far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, showing detained activists on the ground, calling it "insane." "What you saw in that video, is this [infinitesimal] amount of what we actually went through," O'Toole said, questioning the focus on the treatment of predominantly white individuals when compared to the situation in Gaza. Her mother, Dr. Suzie O'Toole, expressed outrage over the treatment her daughter and the other activists endured.
