Australian Jews face harassment after testifying to antisemitism commission

Witnesses who testified before Australia's Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion have reported a significant increase in online hate messages and intimidation. Virginia Bell, the commission's head, issued a stern warning, stating that attempts to subvert the inquiry or silence witnesses are "extraordinarily serious" and will not be tolerated. She confirmed that the commission is monitoring and archiving these posts and that at least one case has been referred to the Australian Federal Police.

We have received reports from a number of witnesses concerning a dramatic increase in online hate messages.

The commission is investigating the timeline and circumstances of the December Hanukkah attack in Sydney, which resulted in 15 fatalities. The inquiry was established in January after mounting pressure from Jewish leaders. Earlier public hearings revealed that no threat assessment was prepared for the Hanukkah celebration despite warnings from a local Jewish security group.

Adding to the concerns, Australia's spy chief, Mike Burgess, told the inquiry that antisemitism in the country has been "left unchecked" since October 7, 2023, leaving Jewish Australians vulnerable. A volunteer with a local Jewish security group, Natalie Levy, was among those who shared their experiences with the commission, highlighting the impact of rising antisemitism.
