Australian woman gives birth to identical quadruplets conceived naturally

A 34-year-old Australian woman has given birth to identical quadruplets, a phenomenon doctors estimate occurs in about one in 15 million pregnancies. Jenitar Na’amoana and her husband Jortham, who already have four children, were surprised to learn they were expecting quadruplets.

The four girls, Emily, Harriet, Catherine, and Alexa (named in honor of the doctor), were born via cesarean section at 28 weeks and four days gestation at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. They are monochorionic, meaning they all developed from a single fertilized egg that split into four embryos, a situation described as "unheard of" by Dr. Alexa Bendall, the maternal-fetal medicine specialist who cared for Na’amoana.

Dr. Bendall noted the pregnancy was considered "extremely high risk," with Na’amoana admitted to the hospital at 25 weeks for close monitoring. "The fact that we have had four beautiful, healthy babies born at 28 weeks and four days is incredible," Bendall stated, expressing joy at being part of the medical team.

Despite the medical complexities, Na’amoana and her husband are overwhelmed with gratitude. To help manage their expanded family, Na’amoana has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a van capable of seating at least ten people. The campaign has already garnered over $25,000, with Na’amoana expressing the challenges of caring for four newborns simultaneously.
