Australians Announce World Cup Squad, Led by 34-Year-Old and Player Who Rejected Italy

Australia's national football team has announced its squad for the upcoming World Cup in North America, with experienced goalkeeper Mathew Ryan and promising young player Cristian Volpato set to lead the side. Volpato, a 22-year-old attacking midfielder born in Sydney, previously played for Italy's youth selections and currently plays for Sassuolo. His inclusion marks a significant moment, as he recently turned down an offer to represent Italy.

Alongside Volpato, Tete Yengi of Machida Zelvia in Japan is the other debutant in the squad. In total, 17 Australian players will be making their World Cup debut. Veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, 34, who played for Levante in Spain's top league this season, will be participating in his fourth World Cup. He will be joined by forward Mathew Leckie of Melbourne City, also making his fourth appearance.

Australia's opening match is against Turkey on June 14, followed by games against the USA on June 20 and Paraguay on June 26.
