Austria's inflation cools to 2.7% in July, driven by food price drop

Austria's inflation rate continued its downward trend in July, reaching 2.7% compared to the same month last year, according to preliminary data from Statistik Austria. This marks a significant decrease from previous months and falls below the Eurozone average. The decline was primarily fueled by lower prices for food, a trend attributed in part to a recent reduction in value-added tax (VAT) on essential food items, which dropped from 10% to 4.9% on July 1. While food, tobacco, and alcohol prices saw a slight decrease of 0.1% in July after a rise in June, services remained the main driver of inflation. Economists expressed surprise at the sharp drop, noting that the VAT reduction's impact was relatively small. Josef Baumgartner of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) suggested that the disinflationary effect on food prices might be short-lived, with expectations of a rebound in the fall or early next year. Austrian officials, including Chancellor Christian Stocker, welcomed the July figures but emphasized the need to permanently reduce inflation to the European Central Bank's target of 2%. National Bank Governor Martin Kocher highlighted the persistent rise in service prices and the potential impact of geopolitical instability on energy prices and future inflation outlooks. The Austrian Trade Union Confederation (ÖGB) also voiced caution, pointing to ongoing pressure on fuel and heating oil prices.
