Austria seeks to extend mandatory military service to nine months

Austria's government announced plans to extend mandatory military service from six to nine months, a move prompted by the evolving security landscape in Europe following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The proposed legislation, agreed upon by governing parties after lengthy negotiations, could be implemented as early as 2028.

To enact this change, the ruling coalition requires a two-thirds majority in Parliament. They are actively seeking support from the Freedom Party (FPO) and the Green Party to pass the necessary legislation. The government's plan involves adding three months of mandatory reserve training to the current basic military service. Officials estimate the new system could be operational from January 1, 2027.

Initially, the alternative civilian service, currently lasting nine months, would not be directly affected. However, the government indicated that this could be extended voluntarily by two months starting in 2027. If recruitment targets are not met, this extension might become mandatory from 2028. This measure aligns with recommendations from an expert commission.

The decision underscores Austria's response to perceived security deteriorations since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Despite maintaining its status as a militarily neutral country and not being a NATO member, Austria is reassessing its defense posture. This development occurs amidst ongoing discussions in Western capitals about potential future actions by the Kremlin, with some experts warning of possible new escalations on the continent by the end of the decade.
