Azerbaijan confiscates cryptocurrency for first time in state's history

In a landmark ruling, Azerbaijan has confiscated cryptocurrency for the first time, marking a significant development in the nation's approach to digital assets. The decision stems from a criminal case involving two individuals apprehended by the State Security Service (SSS) of the Azerbaijan Republic.

The Yasamal District Court found the accused guilty of organizing illegal, clandestine cross-border monetary transfers involving substantial sums. Their methods reportedly included using cryptocurrency for mutual settlements. Both individuals received prison sentences and were ordered to pay fines.

As part of the verdict, the court ordered the confiscation of 830 units of cryptocurrency. These digital assets were held in an account with the international virtual asset service provider Binance, which had been subject to a court-ordered freeze during the preliminary investigation. This confiscation represents the first instance of cryptocurrency being seized in favor of the state in Azerbaijan.

Local media reports indicate that Azerbaijan is actively working on legislation to legally regulate virtual assets and cryptocurrency markets. This case underscores the growing attention and regulatory efforts surrounding digital currencies within the country.
