B.C. Finance Minister Brenda Bailey diagnosed with early-stage, treatable cancer

British Columbia's Finance Minister Brenda Bailey revealed on Thursday that she has been diagnosed with early-stage cancer. In a social media post, Bailey stated the diagnosis came a few weeks ago and that she has a positive prognosis for a full recovery.

Bailey plans to undergo treatment later this summer and anticipates returning to her duties in time for the fall legislative session. She has been working with Premier David Eby to manage her treatment while continuing the government's work. Further details are expected on Friday.

The minister recently delivered the province's fiscal update, which showed a deficit ending $3.3 billion below estimates for the 2025-2026 fiscal year due to higher revenues and reduced spending on capital projects. This news comes as other members of the Legislative Assembly have recently faced health issues. Victoria-Beacon Hill MLA Grace Lore publicly shared her colorectal cancer diagnosis in December 2024, and in April, Premier Eby requested prayers for Vancouver-Strathcona MLA Joan Phillip, who was ill.
