B.C. mother demands answers after son returned without explanation from ministry

A British Columbia mother is seeking accountability from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, stating her son was returned to her care five months after being taken away, with no explanation.

I feel validated, but it doesn’t take away from the utter disgust I feel towards what they’ve done to my son because that trauma is going to last him a lifetime.

The mother had initially reached out to the ministry for help when her son began exhibiting violent behavior, leading to a Voluntary Care Agreement. However, she claims the agreement was not honored and her child was seized. Her story gained attention after airing on Global News in June.

Less than 24 hours after the story aired, social workers reportedly visited her home. A month later, her file was transferred to a different agency, and efforts were made to reunite the family before her son's birthday. "I feel validated, but it doesn’t take away from the utter disgust I feel towards what they’ve done to my son because that trauma is going to last him a lifetime," the mother stated.

I think that the government has gotten into the position of removing children first instead of offering resources first.

MLA Misty Van Popta highlighted this case as indicative of a systemic issue in B.C., arguing the government often removes children before offering necessary resources. "This was just a mother who reached out for resources. This was not the case of needing to have a child removed against the mother’s wishes," Van Popta said.

Minister Jodie Wickens was unavailable for an interview, and the ministry declined to answer specific questions about the child's removal, citing privacy. The mother noted that she is now receiving some of the support she had initially requested since her son's return.
