Babcock University disowns fake honorary certificate issued to comedian Carter Efe

Babcock University has issued a strong denial regarding a circulating "Honorary Certificate" allegedly awarded to Nigerian comedian and content creator Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, known as Carter Efe. The university stated in a release that the document is fraudulent and has no affiliation with them. It also announced that legal steps are being initiated to identify and prosecute those responsible for creating and disseminating the fake certificate. Employers, professional bodies, and the general public have been cautioned against accepting or acting upon the document. The controversy began on September 23, 2025, when Carter Efe claimed during a livestream that he had graduated from Babcock University with first-class honors in Biochemistry, stating he was the best in his set. He later reiterated this claim on his X account. While initially dismissed by many as a joke, the issue resurfaced in June 2026 with the appearance of the fake honorary certificate online. Babcock University highlighted several errors in the fraudulent document. It noted the non-existence of the "Babcock University Biochemistry Computer Club" listed on the certificate, explaining that Biochemistry falls under the College of Health and Medical Sciences, while the Computer Club is part of the School of Computing and Engineering Sciences. Furthermore, the university clarified that the academic term "First Class Upper" is not recognized, with "First Class Honours" being the correct classification. The institution also stressed that student clubs or departments are not authorized to issue degrees or academic titles, with only official documents from the Registrar's Office being valid. The university warned that the creation or use of fake academic documents is a serious offense, potentially leading to legal action for those involved in producing or using forged certificates for employment, admission, promotion, or immigration purposes. Babcock University reserves the right to pursue both civil and criminal actions against individuals misusing its name, logo, seal, or certificates.
