Bacterial infection spreads among children on Croatian coast; minister urges calm

Cases of impetigo, a contagious bacterial skin infection, have surfaced among children along Croatia's coast during the busy summer tourist season, sparking concern among residents and visitors. However, Health Minister Irena Hrstić has urged the public not to panic, emphasizing that the infection is not uncommon during warmer months.

"No need to worry. This doesn't happen every summer. As they stated, hygiene should be maintained, and it has been confirmed with the Croatian Institute of Public Health – the sea is clean, there is no reason for concern. Let's enjoy the summer," Hrstić told HRT.

Impetigo is a highly contagious superficial skin infection. It spreads through direct contact with skin lesions or indirectly via contaminated items like towels, bedding, or toys. This makes it particularly prevalent among children in families, kindergartens, and other groups. The infection can be caused by Streptococcus group A or Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, leading to mild or more severe forms of the illness.

Health experts advise prompt treatment to prevent the spread of skin lesions and transmission to others. According to the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, impetigo most frequently affects preschool and school-aged children, especially during warm, humid periods when minor skin injuries and insect bites are more common.
