Bad-smelling litter box? Key steps for a deep, effective clean

A clean litter box is not just a matter of keeping unpleasant smells out of the home. It also supports a cat’s physical and emotional well-being, according to Purina, while regular maintenance helps prevent bacteria from spreading indoors.

For a deep clean, the used litter should first be emptied into a sturdy garbage bag. The container can then be soaked with hot water and neutral soap or liquid detergent for 10 minutes, loosening waste stuck to the sides.

AniCura Spain recommends diluted white vinegar to tackle stubborn stains and neutralize odors. Bleach and ammonia should be avoided because their vapors can irritate a cat’s respiratory system and may lead the animal to reject the litter box. The tray must be dried completely before fresh litter goes in. Residual moisture can create more odors and encourage mold.

The final step is to add a 5-to-7-centimeter layer of good-quality clumping litter. FMVZ of the National Autonomous University of Mexico also advises removing solid waste and clumps at least once or twice a day. The plastic tray should be replaced once a year, since claw marks and cracks can retain bacteria that ordinary washing cannot remove.
