Baejae High Baseball Team Seeks Retrial After Mocking Gwangju Uprising

The baseball team from Baejae High School in Seoul is seeking a retrial after facing a severe six-month suspension. The disciplinary action stems from chants made by team members during a game that were widely seen as mocking the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement. The incident sparked public outrage and led to the team's disqualification from the ongoing high school baseball championship.

In an attempt to atone for their actions, the Baejae High players visited their opponents, Gwangju Jeil High School, to offer an apology. They also paid respects at the May 18 National Cemetery. Following these gestures, Gwangju Jeil High School submitted a petition requesting leniency for Baejae High, acknowledging the apology and the visit to the cemetery.

Despite these efforts, the Korea Baseball Softball Association initially ruled a six-month ban and forfeiture of remaining games in the tournament. This decision effectively ended their participation in the current championship and barred them from all other competitions scheduled for this year. The team's appeal for a retrial, submitted on the final day for applications, will now be reviewed by the Sports Arbitration Committee of the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation.
