Baku-Moscow relations fully normalized, says Aliyev

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared that relations between Baku and Moscow have completely normalized, marking an end to a difficult period. He conveyed this assessment during a meeting with participants of the Shusha Global Media Forum.

"I think everything is going well, and we are happy about that," Aliyev stated, indicating that the complex phase in Azerbaijan-Russia relations is now behind them. He elaborated that the bilateral ties cover both traditional spheres of interaction and new potential areas of cooperation.

Aliyev highlighted that contacts are actively maintained across various levels, including governmental bodies, co-chairs of the intergovernmental commission, foreign ministries, and presidential administrations. This multi-faceted engagement underscores the comprehensive nature of the normalized relationship.

The statement follows a period of tension between the two nations. Moscow and Baku experienced strained relations, particularly after the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane near Aktau. Further exacerbating the conflict were incidents in Yekaterinburg in late June 2025, involving the harsh detention of dozens of Azerbaijani nationals, two of whom died. In response, Azerbaijan arrested Russian journalists, IT specialists, and tourists, and shut down the Sputnik Azerbaijan news agency.

Earlier, on June 28 of the previous year, the Investigative Committee for the Sverdlovsk region announced the suppression of an ethnic criminal group suspected of multiple murders and attempted murders. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a special statement at the time, condemning the actions of Russian security forces as "unacceptable violence."
