Balen asks Kulman Ghising how to rescue people trapped in hydropower tunnels

Prime Minister Balen Shah’s meeting with Kulman Ghising focused on a particularly urgent question in the flood response: how to rescue people trapped inside hydropower tunnels.

We met to provide suggestions on what we saw and understood during our field visits to various places in this disaster situation, and what needs to be done.

Ghising, chairperson of the Ujyalo Nepal Party, met Shah at the prime minister’s official residence in Singha Durbar on Thursday. He said his team had visited several flood-affected areas and came to share its observations and recommendations.

The team gave the government both written and verbal advice on rescue, relief and resettlement. Ghising said the recommendations covered the measures needed in the current disaster situation, with particular attention to people still inside hydropower tunnels.

After receiving the briefing, Shah said the government would make every possible effort to advance the rescue operation. Ghising quoted him as saying, “He said that the government would do whatever it takes in this regard. He said that no matter what the circumstances are, whatever resources and personnel need to be mobilised, they will be mobilised and the operation will be taken forward.”
