Bali to Fully Close Suwung Landfill Amidst Waste Management Challenges

Bali is embarking on a significant environmental initiative by gradually closing the Suwung landfill (TPA Suwung), a move aligned with national directives. This transition, however, has presented immediate challenges, with a noticeable accumulation of waste along roadsides across the island. The situation has been further complicated by instances of residents resorting to burning trash, releasing toxic smoke that pollutes the air over the popular tourist destination.

In response to these growing concerns, the Balinese government is taking decisive action. A strict 'zero tolerance' policy is being enforced to combat the open burning of waste. This policy aims to curb the immediate health and environmental hazards posed by uncontrolled burning and to encourage more responsible waste management practices among the populace.

The Suwung landfill, which has been operational since 1984, officially ceased accepting organic waste on April 1st. The complete closure is slated for August 1st. This phased approach is intended to allow for a smoother transition and to mitigate the disruptive effects of a sudden shutdown. However, the visible increase in uncollected garbage and the associated air pollution highlight the complexities of waste management on such a large scale, especially in a region heavily reliant on its pristine environment for tourism.
