Banamex celebrates 142 years, reinforces commitment to Mexico's development

Banamex is celebrating 142 years of uninterrupted operation in Mexico, ushering in a new era as an independent financial group. The institution is focused on strengthening its growth, accelerating technological transformation, and continuing its commitment to Mexico's economic development.

Founded on June 2, 1884, Banamex's board chairman, Fernando Chico Pardo, expressed confidence in the bank's readiness to face future challenges and meet evolving customer needs. "This year has a very special meaning for us, because it marks a new stage as Banamex: a renewed, solid financial group deeply committed to Mexico," Chico Pardo stated. "Today we look to the future with optimism, prepared to leverage technological advancements, respond to our clients' new needs, and continue driving the country's development. As of the end of 2025, Banamex reported a substantial operational footprint, including over 38,000 employees, 13.5 million digital customers, 1,261 branches, 9,081 ATMs, and 13,688 access points through correspondents. The bank processed an average of over 190 million digital transactions, highlighting the growth of its electronic channels and the increasing adoption of digital financial services by users.

Under the general direction of Edgardo del Rincón, Banamex currently serves over 20 million clients and maintains a significant presence in cities and localities that generate 95% of the national GDP. The bank's strategy centers on expanding the digitalization of financial services, with a strong emphasis on personalizing and simplifying the user experience. This anniversary coincides with the finalization of Banamex's separation from Citi, a process completed in 2024, paving the way for a new chapter for both organizations. Throughout its history, Banamex has been instrumental in key milestones of Mexico's financial system, including issuing the first checks in 1886 and opening a New York agency in the 1920s, becoming the first Latin American bank with a presence in the city.
