Bandits kill vigilante leader in Katsina, trigger highway protest

A vigilante leader was killed by bandits in Gora Village, Katsina State, Nigeria, sparking protests that led to a temporary blockade of the Malumfashi-Katsina highway. The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the incident, reporting that their operatives arrived after the attackers had fled.

On July 15, 2026, at about 10:00 am, a distress call was received at Malumfashi Division that a group of armed bandits had attacked Gora Village, Malumfashi LGA. Upon receipt of the report, the DPO swiftly mobilised and led a team of operatives to the scene. The team successfully repelled the bandits and foiled the attack.

According to a police statement, a distress call was received Wednesday morning about armed bandits invading Gora Village. The Divisional Police Officer led a team to the scene and successfully repelled the attackers. However, before security forces arrived, the bandits fatally shot the community's vigilante leader, Alhaji Nuhu Barau. The police have intensified patrols to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Later that day, an angry mob blocked a section of the Malumfashi-Katsina highway, disrupting traffic. Police and military personnel dispersed the crowd without further escalation, and normalcy was restored. While no arrests have been made regarding the blockade, an investigation is underway to identify the assailants and understand the circumstances.

Regrettably, before the arrival of the operatives, the assailants fatally shot one Alhaji Nuhu Barau, a local vigilante leader.

The police command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property. "While the Command deeply sympathises with the community, it strongly cautions members of the public against taking the law into their own hands. Members of the public are urged to channel all grievances through the appropriate channels," stated DSP Abubakar Sadiq, the Public Relations Officer. Local sources indicated that the attack claimed the lives of the vigilante leader and another resident.
