Bangkok named best city for under-30s in new global ranking

Bangkok has been crowned the ultimate city for young people, according to Time Out magazine's inaugural ranking tailored for those under 30. The survey, which polled over 18,500 residents globally, reveals a distinct set of priorities for Generation Z, diverging significantly from preferences of older demographics.

Even 84 percent of young respondents stated that they are happy with life in Bangkok, while 71 percent confirmed that it is a city where one can live on a limited budget.

Young urbanites prioritize affordability, both financially and culturally, alongside a lively nightlife, the ease of forming new friendships, and walkability. The ability to explore a city on foot emerged as a crucial factor, driven by environmental awareness and the practical benefit of being free. Diversity, inclusivity, ample green spaces, and efficient public transport also rank high, painting a picture of an ideal city as one that is simultaneously exciting, connected, and financially sustainable.

Thailand's capital, Bangkok, secured the top spot, impressing young respondents with high scores for happiness and affordability. A remarkable 84 percent of young people surveyed reported happiness with their life in Bangkok, while 71 percent found it a city manageable on a limited budget. Crucially, Bangkok was highlighted for its social aspect, with residents being the most likely globally to state that making new friends is easy in their city.

The city's arts and culture scene received a staggering 96 percent approval rating, and 91 percent described the quality of life as "good" or "amazing." Cape Town, South Africa, rounded out the top three, with 82 percent of young residents expressing happiness. The coastal city was praised for its beauty and affordable nightlife, with 76 percent finding going out for drinks budget-friendly. New York and Copenhagen also featured in the top five, recognized for their vibrancy, walkability, nightlife, and overall quality of life.
