Bangladesh eyes maritime nuclear tech, including floating plants

Bangladesh is actively exploring the integration of advanced nuclear technologies for maritime applications, signaling a keen interest in floating nuclear power plants and advanced reactors. Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam articulated this position during the first ministerial-level Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications of Sea (ATLAS) launch event in Washington D.C.

Anam stated that advanced nuclear technologies, particularly small modular reactors (SMRs), could play a crucial role in addressing Bangladesh's rising energy demands, enhancing energy security, and combating climate change. He stressed that the nation's pursuit of nuclear technology would be guided by an unwavering commitment to the highest standards of safety, security, and international safeguards.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also recognized the potential of advanced SMRs for maritime uses. These could include applications in commercial shipping and the development of floating nuclear power plants designed to supply electricity to coastal and remote communities. The ATLAS event convened global leaders, including U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, alongside representatives from regulatory bodies and the nuclear and maritime industries.

Bangladesh's engagement in these discussions positions it among nations considering innovative solutions for energy production and security. The focus on maritime nuclear technology suggests a strategic approach to leveraging these advancements for national development and energy diversification.
