Bangladesh gas supply disrupted by FSRU fault; no timeline for restoration

A critical technical fault at an Excelerate Energy-operated floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Moheshkhali has crippled Bangladesh's gas supply for four days. Petrobangla announced that local and foreign technical teams are working "relentlessly" to repair the unit and restart operations, but offered no timeline for when normal supply would resume.

The disruption has significantly impacted the country, reducing gas supply to the national grid by about 450 million cubic feet per day, or 17 percent. This brings the total supply down to approximately 2,170 mmcfd, far below the demand of nearly 3,800 mmcfd. The reduced gas pressure has led to long queues at CNG stations and has forced industries to struggle to maintain production.

Officials revealed that local technical teams were initially unable to identify the cause of the fault, necessitating the arrival of foreign specialists. The FSRU operator, Excelerate Energy, only confirmed a technical fault without specifying its origin. Petrobangla's statement did not clarify if the foreign team has identified the cause or how long the FSRU might remain offline. Bangladesh relies on two FSRUs, which together supply about 970 mmcfd of LNG, representing roughly 37 percent of the nation's total gas supply.
