Bangladesh President Shahabuddin Reportedly Near Resignation Amid Political Maneuvers

Bangladesh's President Mohammed Shahabuddin is reportedly considering resignation, with multiple sources close to the matter indicating the possibility has intensified in recent weeks. Shahabuddin, who assumed office in April 2023, is notably the only high-ranking official remaining from before the mass uprising in July 2024.

Sources claim that Shahabuddin spoke by phone with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a medical visit to London in May. Hasina has been living in exile in India since July 2024. Following intelligence agency monitoring of this conversation, a message was reportedly conveyed to the president suggesting his step down.

A senior BNP leader, however, described the situation as more complex than just the reported phone call. The political climate has become more sensitive following Hasina's announcement of plans to return to Bangladesh in December. Reuters reported on July 10 that Hasina, who faces a death sentence and whose party is banned, intends to return from exile with other Awami League leaders around December to surrender.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman recently directed relevant authorities to intensify efforts against the Awami League and its affiliated organizations.

While no final decision has been made regarding the timing of the president's resignation or his successor, Shahabuddin's departure is viewed by a high-level government source as a natural progression. He had previously expressed intentions to step down midway through his term after the February parliamentary election, citing humiliation by the interim government. More recently, in February, he stated he would remain in office if the government wished but would resign voluntarily if preferred.
