Bangladesh's President Shahabuddin likely to resign soon: Reports

Speculation is mounting that Bangladesh's President Mohammed Shahabuddin is preparing to resign from his post in the near future. Local media outlets and political sources have fueled rumors of an imminent change at Bangabhaban, the presidential palace, with health grounds cited as a potential reason for his departure.

Reports from Bangladeshi media, including Jamuna TV, have indicated that President Shahabuddin might resign as early as Friday. Prothom Alo, a leading daily, has also reported, citing its sources, that the president's resignation could be due to health issues. These reports have intensified discussions about a potential transition at the highest level of the state.

Adding to the speculation, Zulkarnain Saer, a UK-based Bangladeshi journalist, claimed on social media that President Shahabuddin could resign. Saer suggested that the government might appoint the current Cabinet Secretary, Nasimul Ghani, as the president's successor. This development is seen as surprising, as no senior leader from the opposition party appears to be under consideration.

According to Articles 50 and 54 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, if President Shahabuddin tenders his resignation to the Speaker of Parliament, the Speaker will assume the role of Acting President. Subsequently, the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) will be required to elect a new President within 90 days to complete the remaining term.

Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as the President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, after being elected unopposed as the nominee of the ruling Awami League. His five-year term is scheduled to conclude in April 2028. The potential resignation, if it occurs, would trigger a significant constitutional process for selecting a new head of state.
