Bangladesh to highlight reforms and economic potential at UNGA, minister says

Bangladesh plans to use the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly to present its development, economic potential and reform agenda, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said.

Speaking at a Dhaka discussion titled “Upcoming UNGA and Branding of Bangladesh,” Shama said economic diplomacy and an investment-friendly environment were priorities. She said the government inherited a damaged banking sector and was working to improve accountability and reform. It is also developing a one-stop service, digital services and online registration to simplify investment procedures, including for non-resident Bangladeshis.

The government is building a consolidated database through its “One Citizen One Card” and Probashi Card initiatives. The Probashi Card programme aims to issue 200,000 cards by 2027. Shama also said illegal migration and broker networks were harming Bangladesh’s image. The foreign ministry is working with the expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment ministry to address the problem.

“The government wants to send skilled workers through vocational training, both men and women, so that they can get dignified employment abroad,” she said. She added that the foreign ministry had created a migration wing for the first time.

Shama called for greater diversification of energy and products through renewable energy, exploration of energy sources in Africa, and development of the blue and creative economies. She also said Bangladesh should promote jute as a natural biodegradable fiber at international forums, including the UN General Assembly and the upcoming climate conference.

Other speakers urged the country to use climate negotiations, including carbon trading and the Loss and Damage Fund, to defend its interests. They also called for stronger supply chains, investment in skills, education and judicial reform, accountability, and using Bangladesh’s reputation in UN peacekeeping to support trade and investment. Human rights activist Nur Khan Liton said enforced disappearances should be exposed and taken to court.
