Bangladesh to recruit 100,000 health workers in major healthcare overhaul

Bangladesh is embarking on a significant healthcare reform, prioritizing preventive care over treatment. Prime Minister's Special Assistant SM Ziauddin Hyder announced plans to establish a primary healthcare unit in every union and urban ward across the nation. A key component of this overhaul is the recruitment of 100,000 new community health workers.

Hyder highlighted that nutrition policies have historically lacked strong government backing, often being donor-driven. While acknowledging progress in combating malnutrition and stunting, he stressed the need for a more robust, government-led, and coordinated approach. The new plan aims to strengthen this by integrating nutrition actions across various sectors, including agriculture, education, and social welfare.

We have achieved gains in tackling malnutrition and stunting, though progress has been slow. We need a stronger, government-led and coordinated approach.

Under the proposed system, each primary healthcare unit will be staffed by nine community health workers. This recruitment drive will significantly expand the current frontline workforce, raising it from approximately 43,000 to 143,000, though the estimated national requirement is 152,000. These workers will conduct regular household visits to provide preventive services such as blood pressure and blood sugar screening, mental health checks, and child growth monitoring.

The initiative also includes the introduction of digital health cards and an electronic referral system. Hyder believes this will facilitate early disease detection, lower out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for citizens, and alleviate the strain on overburdened hospitals. To enhance coordination, the government is considering the establishment of a National Food and Nutrition Authority or Commission to oversee policies and ensure inter-ministerial collaboration.
