Bank Hostage Situation in Brienz Ends Peacefully; Suspect Arrested

A tense hostage situation at a bank in Brienz, located in the Swiss canton of Bern, concluded peacefully on Friday afternoon. The incident began shortly before 2:55 PM when authorities received a report of an armed man inside the bank on Hauptstrasse.

According to a statement from the cantonal police, the man had allegedly threatened staff and demanded that the doors be closed. Responding officers arrived to find three individuals inside, with the assumption that the two employees were being held against their will. The police quickly cordoned off the area and initiated a large-scale security operation.

During the operation, both bank employees managed to exit the building safely, one after the other. The alleged perpetrator then placed his weapon on the floor inside the bank and emerged, presumably to surrender. He was subsequently arrested by the police, and the weapon was secured. Authorities confirmed that no one was injured during the entire event.

Emergency services, including the Brienz fire department and an ambulance team, were on site. The regional public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation to determine the precise sequence of events and the underlying reasons for the incident.
