Barcelona SC must beat Independiente del Valle to stay in the Libertadores race

Barcelona SC arrive at one of the most important matches of their season with little margin for error. They will host Independiente del Valle needing three points to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 Copa Libertadores alive.

The two clubs enter the match from sharply different positions. Independiente lead Ecuador’s Liga Pro with 68 points and remain on course for the title. Barcelona are sixth on 39 points, currently occupying the final place that qualifies for the hexagonal championship round.

Barcelona’s position became more precarious after a 2-0 loss to bottom side Manta FC in the previous round. Another defeat could seriously damage their chances of finishing among the top six and later competing for an international place.

Independiente also need a response after surrendering a two-goal lead against Universidad Católica. They led 2-0 before drawing 2-2, missing the chance to set a new league record of 12 consecutive victories. The result kept their pursuit of the title on course, but ended their opportunity to extend the winning run.

The round also includes a direct contest between two of Independiente’s main pursuers. Second-placed Aucas, on 47 points, will host fourth-placed Universidad Católica, who have 44. A Católica victory would bring them level with Aucas. Aucas enter the match after a 1-0 win over Libertad, while Católica will draw confidence from recovering against the league leaders. Macará, who sit third, are also seeking to remain among the leading teams.
