Bars and liquor shops to close, DJs banned on Maha Ashtami in Bengal, CM Suvendu says

Liquor shops and bars across West Bengal will close on Maha Ashtami, while DJ music will be banned during the state’s Durga Puja festivities and immersion processions.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the measures at a coordination meeting with Durga Puja committees at Milan Mela Prangan. He said all liquor sales would stop on the day devotees offer anjali to Maa Durga, including sales in bars.

The restrictions are being introduced as part of a set of measures intended to keep this year’s Puja celebrations peaceful. Liquor is in high demand during the celebrations in West Bengal.

Adhikari also told Puja committees to ensure that their idols, pandals and themes do not hurt religious sentiments or disrespect Sanatan traditions. Theme-based pandals will still be allowed, but he said committees should select their themes carefully.

On the day when devotees offer anjali to Maa Durga, all liquor shops in the state will remain closed. There will be no liquor available in bars either.
