Baseball player Gorkys Hernández confirms wife died in Venezuela earthquake

Former Major League Baseball player Gorkys Hernández has announced the tragic death of his wife, Deisy Tovar, during a powerful earthquake that recently hit Venezuela. Hernández shared the heartbreaking news on social media, expressing his profound grief.

Tovar was reportedly staying at the Eduard’s hotel in La Guaira with other individuals connected to players preparing for a game. The hotel structure collapsed during the earthquake, leading to her death. Hernández posted a touching tribute to his wife on Instagram, calling her "the most beautiful woman in my life" and vowing she would always be with him.

The earthquake, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, struck the northern part of the country, causing widespread devastation. The United Nations estimates that over six million people were affected, with significant damage to the coastal state. In response to the disaster and the loss of life, including family members of other players who were also at the hotel, the Major League Baseball (LMB) has officially suspended its 2026 season indefinitely.
