Bayern’s Historic Run Ends After Nearly Two Years

Bayern Munich’s nearly two-year reign at the top of the Bundesliga ended with a goalless draw at Schalke. For the first time in 67 league rounds, the Bavarian giants did not finish the round as leaders.

Vincent Kompany’s team had opened the season with a convincing 5-1 win over Stuttgart, but Schalke held them in Gelsenkirchen. Loris Karius produced several important saves and emerged as the standout player. Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer singled him out after the match as one of the main reasons Bayern failed to win.

The result ended more than Bayern’s lead. The champions also failed to score in a league match for the first time in a long period, bringing their run of scoring in at least one goal across 59 official matches to an end.

Augsburg took advantage in Frankfurt, recovering from Jonathan Burkardt’s sixth-minute opener to win 4-1. Arijon Ibrahimović equalized at the start of the second half, Robin Fellhauer put Augsburg ahead a minute later, and Alexis Claude-Maurice and Fabian Rieder completed the win. Manuel Baum’s side have six points and a 7-1 goal difference after two rounds. After beating Schalke 3-0 in the opening round, Augsburg now sit alone at the top of the Bundesliga for the first time in club history. Bayern will have a chance to return to winning ways in the next round, but their 67-round run at the summit is over.
