Behind Princess Kalina’s face lies a fight for survival: A severe infection changed her appearance forever

For years, public attention around Princess Kalina of Bulgaria focused less on her royal duties than on her unusual appearance. Her strongly muscular build prompted speculation that she had undergone cosmetic surgery. Kalina has now rejected that explanation, saying her physique comes from years of training and sporting discipline.

The most persistent speculation, however, concerned changes to Kalina’s nose. Muñoz rejected claims of failed cosmetic surgery in 2018, calling them “absurd misinformation,” and described what he said was the real cause.

The problem began in childhood, when Kalina broke her front teeth in a school accident. About two decades later, in 1999, while studying in London, she underwent a routine dental procedure to repair the injury. Complications led to a serious infection that spread from the bone to the cartilage in her nose. Her condition worsened during a maritime expedition where suitable medical help was unavailable.

The infection then spread toward her eye, making an emergency evacuation and surgery necessary. “The priority was to stop the infection and save her eye and nose. The aesthetic consequences did not matter at that moment,” Muñoz said. Medical intervention proved decisive, but the effects on her appearance remained permanent.

Kalina was born in Madrid in 1972 as the only daughter of Simeon II. She studied in Spain and the United Kingdom and earned a degree in art history. She married Muñoz in 2002, and they have a son, Simeon-Hassan. Her story, marked by a serious health crisis and persistence, contrasts with the superficial assumptions that long shaped public discussion of her appearance.
