Belgian diamond group gifts Trump lavish ring after tariff relief

A lavish, diamond-encrusted ring featuring the U.S. flag, "1776," and "2026" was presented to U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Bill White to give to President Donald Trump. The ring, adorned with 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds, and six rubies, was a gift from the Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC) to mark America's 250th birthday.

Trump expressed his gratitude in a prerecorded video message, calling it a "magnificent Freedom 250 ring." Isidore Mörsel, president of AWDC, presented the ring, stating, "May this ring serve as a lasting reminder that true partnership, like the finest natural diamonds, are formed under pressure, endure the test of time, and shine brightest when built on trust." The ring's interior is engraved with "Crafted in Antwerp for Donald John Trump."

The presentation comes months after Belgium's diamond industry successfully lobbied for the removal of U.S. tariffs on diamond imports. In September, AWDC announced it had secured a zero percent import tariff on Antwerp's annual export of over $2 billion in polished diamonds to the U.S. While an AWDC spokesperson stated the group provided "input" to the European Commission during tariff negotiations, they did not directly lobby the U.S. administration.

A White House official noted that the ring had not yet been presented to Trump. The gift, while not as financially significant as other presents like a $400 million plane from Qatar, serves as a notable example of the elaborate gifts exchanged in an effort to gain favor with the U.S. president.
