Belgrade Medical Faculty Rejects University Claims of Illegality

The Medical Faculty in Belgrade has issued a strong rebuttal to accusations from the University of Belgrade's Expanded Collegium, which questioned the legality of the faculty's internal operations and the recent election of its dean. The faculty categorically denied these claims, asserting that all actions and decisions were made in full compliance with the Law on Higher Education, the University's statutes, and its own internal regulations.

The University's Collegium had previously raised concerns about an "attempt at institutional usurpation and circumvention of legally prescribed procedures" at the Medical Faculty. Specifically, it pointed to the election of Professor Milica Bajčetić as dean on June 12, noting that the decision was made in a session where access was reportedly denied to some council members. The Collegium expressed particular alarm that such actions could undermine the University's integrity and create legal uncertainty.

In its response, the Medical Faculty stated that the sessions of its governing bodies adhered to all prescribed procedures, including rules on quorum and decision-making. The faculty deemed the Collegium's claims "unfounded" and damaging to its reputation, arguing that they create a false impression of legal insecurity without any factual or legal basis. The faculty criticized the Collegium's statements for exacerbating the crisis and fostering division within the academic community.

The Medical Faculty also highlighted what it described as the Collegium's silence regarding its own role during student blockades, suggesting a selective approach to upholding legality. To resolve the dispute and eliminate any doubt, the faculty has formally requested an inspection by relevant authorities to review the conduct of both the Medical Faculty and the University of Belgrade.
