Belgrade Tram Derails, Injuring Passengers; Human Error Cited as Possible Cause

A tram on Belgrade's line 5 derailed this morning at the intersection of Cara Dušana and Knićaninova streets, colliding with a nearby building and causing injuries. The incident occurred as the KT4 tram was navigating a switch.

The tram hit a nearby building, and unfortunately, several passengers and the tram driver were injured. Most of the injuries are reported to be minor, while two passengers sustained more serious injuries in the form of broken extremities.

Gradsko saobraćajno preduzeće (GSP), the city's public transport company, issued a statement acknowledging the accident. They indicated that human error, particularly the driver's speed not being adjusted for the curve, is a potential cause. GSP also mentioned the possibility of issues with the switch's position being investigated.

Multiple passengers and the tram driver sustained injuries. While most are reported to be minor, two passengers suffered more severe injuries, including broken limbs. GSP expressed sincere regret for the passengers' injuries and stated that a final determination of the cause will follow a comprehensive expert analysis.

According to preliminary information and current findings, there are indications that one of the possible causes of the event could be human factor, i.e., inappropriate speed of the vehicle when passing through the switch, as well as checking the position of the switch itself. The final cause and all relevant facts will be determined after the procedure is completed and the expert analysis is conducted.

The company emphasized that the exact cause and all relevant facts will be established after the investigation concludes. The incident has raised concerns about public transport safety in the city.
