Ben Carroll names ministry, adds new artificial intelligence portfolio

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll has finalized his new cabinet lineup after assuming the Labor leadership from Jacinta Allan last week. The reshaped ministry introduces a new portfolio focused on artificial intelligence, signaling a strategic shift in government priorities.

Anthony Carbines, previously the police minister, will head the new Ministry for Artificial Intelligence and the Digital Economy. His responsibilities will encompass ensuring ethical and responsible AI development and fostering digital investment. Carbines will also retain his roles as racing minister and leader of the house, while taking on major events, medical research, and economic development.

A notable change is the elimination of the Ministry for Transport Infrastructure, a department that has overseen significant projects like the Metro Tunnel and the Suburban Rail Loop. Gabrielle Williams, who recently became deputy premier, will now handle women and gender equality, skills and training, and First Peoples, along with the education portfolio. Sonya Kilkenny will manage treasury, industrial relations, energy, resources, the State Electricity Commission, climate action, and environment, while also remaining leader of the government in the Legislative Council. Tim Richardson joins the cabinet as the minister for local government, consumer affairs, and renters.
