Benedikt Spierings to lead merged Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and Antwerp Symphony Orchestra

Benedikt Spierings steps into the top leadership role at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, a significant move for Flanders' largest cultural institution. Her appointment as general director, effective September 1, was approved by the board, signaling a focus on continuity as the newly merged entities navigate a crucial transition phase.

Spierings, a trained violinist and musicologist, brings a wealth of experience from her tenure within the arts organization. She joined Opera Ballet Vlaanderen in 2021, progressing through roles in central planning and production before becoming operational director and deputy general director in 2024. Her selection followed a rigorous process involving an international jury of experts, underscoring the board's confidence in her leadership.

The merger of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, formally completed on March 1, presents both opportunities and challenges. Spierings will oversee the ongoing integration of these two prominent cultural bodies. Key priorities in the coming years include solidifying the merged organization, developing the policy plan for 2028-2032, and addressing various infrastructure matters.
