Benson wins Michigan Democratic gubernatorial primary, CBS News projects

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is projected to win the Democratic gubernatorial primary, CBS News reported Tuesday evening. The projected victory sets her up for a head-to-head contest against the Republican nominee in the upcoming general election.

As of 9 p.m. on election night, unofficial results showed Benson leading significantly with 211,877 votes compared to Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson's 38,439 votes, with 17% of the ballots counted. Benson's win secures the Democratic nomination, and she will now compete against the victor of the Republican primary, which features Congressman John James and businessman Perry Johnson.

Democratic National Convention Chair Ken Martin congratulated Benson, highlighting her dedication as Secretary of State to serving Michigan residents, protecting voting rights, and delivering results. She has previously been critical of former President Trump's claims of voter fraud and has faced legal challenges, including lawsuits alleging racial discrimination in her office and a violation of state law for hosting a campaign press conference in a state building.
