Berlin CSD attack: One dead, several injured in suspected terror incident

Berlin is reeling after a suspected Islamist terror attack on Saturday evening, where a driver rammed his car into pedestrians near the Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebrations in the Tiergarten. The attack left one woman dead and several others with serious injuries.

Authorities are actively pursuing a 21-year-old suspect. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the incident is being treated as an Islamist terror attack. The focus remains on apprehending the perpetrator(s) and mourning the victims, with political evaluations to follow.

Politicians across Germany expressed their condolences and condemned the violence. Hessian Minister President Boris Rhein called the attack "cowardly and inhumane," targeting those who stand for a free society. Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck highlighted the importance of diversity and tolerance, vowing to counter such acts of hate with all legal means. He noted that there were no immediate indications of danger in Hessen and no known connections between the Berlin attacker and the region.

Landtag President Astrid Wallmann and the SPD Hessen also voiced their shock, emphasizing the need to defend the freedom to live and love openly against intimidation. A vigil was planned for Sunday evening in Frankfurt, organized by CSD Frankfurt and Fridays for Future Frankfurt, to express solidarity and anger.
