Berlin hostage-taking in supermarket ends after 10 hours; hostage freed

Berlin – A tense hostage situation in a Berlin supermarket concluded early Saturday morning after more than 10 hours, with special police forces successfully freeing the captive and apprehending the perpetrator. The incident, which began late Friday evening, ended without the use of firearms by the police, who deployed a Taser to subdue the suspect.

The hostage, believed to be a female employee of the Rewe supermarket in the Marienfelde district, was reportedly in shock but otherwise unharmed. She was receiving medical attention following her release. The motive behind the man's actions remains unknown, leaving authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to the hours-long standoff.

Law enforcement had cordoned off the area extensively around the supermarket, located in a quiet residential neighborhood in southern Berlin. Numerous police vehicles, ambulances, and fire department units were present throughout the operation. Special forces were positioned outside the building, and at one point, officers used a ladder to gain a vantage point into the store.

According to a supermarket employee, the hostage "was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time." The district of Marienfelde, characterized by its family homes and apartment buildings, is generally considered a peaceful area, making the incident particularly unusual for the locality. Investigations into the perpetrator's background and the reasons for the attack are ongoing.
