Berlin Pride Parade Attack: Main Suspect Shot Dead by Police

German police on Sunday shot and killed the prime suspect in a fatal terrorist attack that targeted a Berlin Pride parade, an event celebrating the LGBTQ community. The 21-year-old suspect, identified as Abdul Ballout, was confronted by officers in a garden plot in the Spandau district of Berlin around 6 p.m. on July 26, 2026.

Authorities stated that Ballout "lunged at police officers with a knife weapon," forcing them to open fire. Despite attempts to provide medical aid at the scene, the suspect succumbed to his injuries. Ballout, who had German citizenship and Lebanese heritage, was known to be a supporter of the Islamic State group and had a history of criminal offenses, including convictions for assault and extortion in 2019 and robbery in 2020.

The attack occurred late on July 25, when a white van plowed into a crowd near the Tiergarten park in central Berlin before crashing into a tree. The incident, which killed one woman and injured 29 others, some severely, disrupted the Christopher Street Day celebrations, one of Europe's largest Pride parades. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt indicated that Ballout was suspected of using a large knife to attack more people after the initial vehicle ramming.

Investigators are treating the incident as an act of Islamist extremism, with evidence pointing towards a terrorist motive. Ballout had previously shared ISIS propaganda online and attempted to join militia groups in Syria. After returning to Germany in November 2025, he was arrested and convicted in May 2026 for "preparing to carry out serious acts of subversive violence," receiving a suspended sentence that accounted for time served in Lebanon and pre-trial detention in Germany.

The attack has reignited debates about immigration policy in Germany, particularly given that perpetrators of previous attacks had come from outside the country. Far-right parties have criticized the government's security policies in the wake of the incident. A vigil for the victims was held at the Brandenburg Gate, drawing hundreds of people holding rainbow flags and flowers.
